Adie's Economic Store

At the bridge corner we popped into the Economic Store, to be greeted by our genial old friend, Mr. Adie, who assured our representative that no one was more welcome. “And now,” said Mr. Adie, “if you are not too bashful, we shall first introduce you to Miss O’Neill, in charge of the showroom.”

Miss O’Neill showed us through the whole of her department. We were particularly impressed with the up-to-dateness of everything. “Yes!” she has everything to suit the most modern styles for both young and old. A full and varied range of ladies’ hats, comprised in which are some particularly attractive designs, first struck our eye. Just being opened for the Christmas trade was a fine variety of dresses, this being one of the lines in which the Economic Store specialises.

Passing on Miss O’Neill tempted our scribe to view the ladies and children’s wear other lines which she has a special supply of for this season.

In surprise our representative queried some of the prices. “Yes,” said Miss O’Neill, “you see you are in the Economic Store now, and prices had to come down in keeping with our slogan, sand to meet times.”

After viewing a very fine assortment of gloves we passed on to Mr. Pollack in the Haberdashery department. Here we were greeted with a view of his very fine range of Christmas novelties. Mr. intentions evidently are to turn no customers away empty handed for he has a variety of everything in his Department including the following novelties and specials:

Scent sprays, manicure sets, fancy Caskets, soaps, all leading makes, dress slides, buckles and clasps. As well he has a new range of fancy boxed handkerchiefs, suspenders sox of all sorts, boxed silk and ordinary shirts, all providing very fine Xmas boxes. And with the swimming carnival and swimming season in view he has purchased a large range of fancy and plain costumes for both ladies and gentlemen.

And last but not least having viewed his usual stocks of everyday wants for which the “Economic Store” is noted, we were introduced to his Santa Claus on which much trouble has been lavished so as to please the hearts of the kiddies.

Next, we passed on to the grocery and hardware depts. Presided over by Messrs McDonald and Flett. “What do you specialise in on this side of the store?” Well, to answer your question in one word, “everything.” But please tell the public that you made a special note of our economic prices for the following special lines – Kenso or Arnott’s Xmas Cades, plum puddings, confectionery, almonds, muscatels, dried fruits, crystillised cherries, jams and cordials.

We have also a specially selected cheap range of Ent glass, china ware, cutlery, etc – very suitable presents.

Adies was previously Cansdell and Co and Mr Archibald Adie, of Quirindi purchased the business.

When Adies took over the store The Manilla Express reported that: "At Cansdell and Co.'s the old is giving place to the new, and the staff is at present engaged in stock taking, prior to the new proprietor (Mr. A. Adie) entering into possession. Mr. D. Penman is still at the store, and whether he remains associated with the firm or makes a change his many friends will “send along with" him their best wishes, which he has earned by urbanity of manner business politeness, and skill.

Regular business is going on at this large establishment, and all departments are well and fully supplied with goods for the festive season and the more sedate periods of the year.

We welcome Mr. Adie to Manilla, and wish for 'him a fair measure of business. He hopes to be in full swing shortly. He comes to us as a man of commercial enterprise and helpful citizenship, who has won the respect of those with whom he has lately been pleasantly associated at Quirindi."
