Manilla Rugby Union
Rugby football was played in Manilla from the late 1890s, with Manilla District Football Club being founded in 1899.
Permission was sought from the cricket club for use of their ground. Local businessmen donated a set of guernseys, a football and the use of a four-in-hand drag for transportation of players to away games.
The Manilla District Football Club became affiliated with New England Rugby Union and participated in the Tamworth series of the junior competition - includes many pictures.

The Manilla Railway
Before the railway was completed in 1899 all goods were transported to Manilla in Bullock Trains or Teamsters. It was hard travelling and work.
Once the railway was up and running it made it easier to transport the successful wheat and wool industry that helped Manilla grow to what it is today.
The railway also made it possible for people to travel to and from Manilla rather than Coaches. But many still did, until the motor car became established on the roads during the early years of 1900.
Bakers Factory-Foundary
Henry Baker established his factory in 1903 and grew to supply Carts and farm machinery throughout NSW, employing many employees
He started to sell Ford and Chevrolet cars in 1914/15 and Harley Davidson motorcycles in 1920.

Memories of Manilla NSW Australia
During the 1980s Marion Bignall, on behalf of the Manilla Historical Society, placed a notice in the Manilla Express for people to submit their stories about their life in Manilla from the past. Eventually enough stories came in to facilitate a book. This was printed in Manilla’s Bicentenary Year 1988.
